Astro Bot Is A Strong Contender For 2024s Game Of The Year

Team Asobi cements itself as an essential PlayStation studio with an imaginative platformer for the ages. A very inventive platformer in its own right, Astro Bot is particularly special for anyone with a place in their heart for PlayStation.

Sony and Team ASOBI have knocked it out of the park with this game, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this game is regarded as one of Sony’s best releases to date. Astro Bot hides over 300 secret bots, including 195 cameo bots from other games spanning PlayStation’s long history. Vicious Void is a galaxy that unlocks after clearing the main game. It contains special challenge levels, and each of them contains a Special Bot to unlock. Astro’s adventure takes him to various galaxies full of planets to explore as he tracks down his scattered crew.

For £60 I want a game I can invest time in to enjoy for at least 2 weeks with a script and story that I will sit and ponder and go “wow” like the original horizon zero dawn or the last of us and remember for years. I don’t deny this game is great, his character with the beams with his legs/his charming character design/personality & visuals are great, but that’s not enough for me. With over 80 stages and more than 15 power ups, players that wanted more of Astro’s Playroom will unlikely be dissatisfied. It will also be interesting to see what kind of new experiences Team Asobi can deliver with its deep knowledge of the DualSense controller. By paying respect to PlayStation’s heritage in new interactive ways, Astro Bot also seems like the perfect game to mark PlayStation’s 30th anniversary. Sony proves with Astro Bot that the company can still put out charming action platformers, but the love letter to PlayStation fans fails to include features that made previous games of the genre so fun to replay. Even within a level, an ability is used in several different and creative ways, but always stemming from its singular mechanic featured in that level.

In the God of War stage, Astro Bot can use Kratos’ axe, for example, which is great, but the hero examples go so far beyond power-ups into their own territory. So, let’s go through TR88 , animal-based power-ups that give Astro Bot a ton of abilities in throughout the adventure. Team Asobi is the last remaining bastion of Japan Studio, the historically creative Sony studio responsible for the likes of Ico, LocoRoco, Gravity Rush, PaRappa the Rapper, and many, many more offbeat classics. Japan Studio was sadly dissolved in 2021, with many of its staff folded into Team Asobi to make Astro Bot.

Filled with references to hardware throughout PlayStation’s history and boasting an abundance of cameo appearances from popular characters, Astro’s Playroom celebrated PlayStation’s history in a unique way. This made Astro not just the new kid on the block, but established the bot as a character integral to the PlayStation brand. This became The Playroom, Team Asobi’s first game.The Playroom came preloaded with the PS4 when it launched back in 2013 and functioned as a showcase of what the PlayStation Camera and DualShock 4 controller could do. One of the mini games featured was AR Bots, a tech demo-like experience that made it seem as if 40 little robots were inside the DualShock 4. By swiping the touchpad you could throw them into the room and interact with them through the PlayStation Camera in AR, before sucking them back into the controller.

Each one of these colorful worlds is crafted with meticulous detail and creativity.

To get help on his mission, Astro can use over 15 new abilities offering unique play styles. As you would expect from an Astro game, these take full advantage of the DualSense controller, its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers so you can feel every little step along the journey. Each galaxy contains four or five main stages, a boss, and a special last level themed around specific PlayStation franchises.

While Astro Bot is on the shorter side than most other games, with the main campaign running only around 12 hours, this is still an experience that players shouldn’t rush through. The levels throughout Astro Bot are some of the best platforming in all of gaming; players should take as long as they need to take it all in. Every stage is crafted with intent, as nothing feels out of place. Even with the levels’ linear design, gamers will want to explore every square inch to discover fun secrets hiding in just about every corner. Team Asobi brought their signature flair to the mix by making Astro Bot’s levels and platforming stand out. Although the game contained the standard gameplay and stages (such as a fire and water level) that are expected of every platformer game, Team Asobi found a way to make these mainstays feel new and fresh.
